Martine and Paul had a busy day in Kettering for Pick Everard this week, shooting their project for the Salvation Army. This neat, and seemingly familiar iteration of a an industrial facility as not as it seems with state of the art management of the donations taking place within, which come to them from across the UK every day. Photography had to start early as the site swings into action at 6.30am, so the camera was duly set up and ready to capture the first wagons as they came into the yard.

The lorries are emptied in much the same way one pours ingredients into a food mixer; by tipping the container up almost vertically and pouring the contents in. The height they reach is quite extraordinary to witness. The emptied donations are then swung arcoss and through the building, sorted by conveyor and assigned to bags by type before onward re-distribution. It’s fast, clean and frankly, fascinating.
