For many years, Martine has collaborated with her husband Paul Mottram to deliver short films about architecture and design. These ventures began when the convergence in technologies allowed the use of the perspective control lens systems employed for architecture to be migrated from stills photography to moving images.
Together as Builtvision Films, Martine and Paul are engaged to work on projects which result in pieces around 3-5 minutes in length which are either set to music, narrated, or interview driven. Martine will generally act in a producing role, whereas Paul shoots and edits the footage for a range of architectural practices, construction teams and educational bodies. The average film is usually shot over 3-4 days on-site, preceded by a day or two of pre-production meetings and site visits where possible. Post-production takes place in-house, where clients are more than welcome to join the creative process during editing. Budgets can be split in the same way as conventional architectural shoots, with costs being shared between multiple parties with a vested interest.
With over thirty years in the broadcast industry, Paul’s experience is wide-ranging and his work with Martine throughout her career has ensured that he has as a finely tuned compositional eye and wide understanding of both the design process and aesthetics of this subject.
