Reflecting on the year that was, or indeed ‘wasn’t’ in the end, Martine says she cannot recall any extended period of time when she did not use her camera since turning 15, and hopes that 2021 will see a very different pathway for the industry and everyone in it. It is inevitable that when the world swings into proper action again, some things will have changed, although clearly certain ways of working will be bound to stay with us as a result of the pandemic.

Certainly the accessibility of members of the business community has become far better – Zoom and MS Teams mean that the time and expense of ‘getting there’ is negated, and there will be an inevitable shift in the configuration of office space in the years to come. This has a double whammy effect on the architectural community though – more conversation and interior work, but far fewer capital build projects.

There will be multiple other shifts as innovation continues to ‘disrupt’ convention. Let’s hope 2021 is a good one, and in the spirit of the visual slice experienced this year, Martine has chosen not to provide a photographic illustration for this bulletin! Shhh……
